Who is Becca Tapert? Can you share a quick bio with us — where you’re from, what you do, and how you got where you are

Hey there, I’m Becca! I was born and raised in a small town about an hour north of Seattle, WA and still reside in Washington. As a young kid I was always playing around with whatever cameras there were: disposable, film camera, VHS camera, floppy disk digital cameras, nikon powershots, you name it. I always had my hands to something whether it be painting, drawing, graphic design, or photography. As I struggled to decide what to study in college, (if you’re currently in this place, it’s totally normal!!), I steered away from anything creative because I thought there was no way to make a living off of it and that art should stay as just a hobby in my life. After my first semester of college, I had a breakdown moment when my parents asked how school was going. I loved the school but was bored and uninspired with what I was studying. My parents were not surprised, to say the least, as my mom always claimed that I would be an artist someday. I quickly switched schools to study Business + Graphic Design and by the age of twenty, I had both my Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degree. Ever since graduating high school I have done freelance work in addition to my other jobs + school. About a year and a half ago, I purchased my first DSLR and started to take photos every chance I could. Today, I have been doing full-time freelance graphic design and photography for four months with no other supplementary income. I am the happiest as I ever have been because I have the opportunity to do what I love every single day.

Describe your personal style in three words.

Clean, Modern, Simple.

Becca Tapert x UNIONBAY

How did you start your career as a photographer/graphic designer?

I already shared a bit about my journey as a creative, but it became a career when I started to treat design and photography more like a job and less like a hobby. Hustling hard everyday, harder than I would at a normal job. Taking pictures every chance I could and designing as many things as possible. Putting my work out to the public via social media, specifically Instagram, was a huge tool in the beginning of my photography career. I don’t share my work on social media to gain fame or popularity or to get cool stuff, but to leverage the opportunities and exposure so that I can work with people and brands in the future. Making your hobby your profession is serious hard work. It comes with a lot of sacrifice and discipline. Saying ‘no’ to less important things so you can make room for the most important things. A lot of people have the impression that if you are a freelancer then you have tons of free time. Well, that can be true in the case of people who are comfortable and not eager to grow. But in my case, I am busier than I have ever been before, working long days, but it’s all things I am happy to be busy with.

Where do you get inspiration?

I draw a lot of my inspiration from my peers and other artists. Social media a large way I follow other artists work and stay inspired.

What are your top three favorite Instagram accounts to follow and why?

Hard question for me since I have the worst time picking favorites!

I love his perspective on things and the simplicity yet brilliance behind his photos.

I love the colors in her photos, they almost look like film + just the intimacy she captures between the couples in her shots.

Okay, his work speaks for itself. This dude is a wizard. Every shot is incredible, there is not one I can pick out as “less than.”

What is your favorite picture you’ve ever taken?

I joke around with my friend Sam that I always have the worst luck with weather conditions, lighting or whatever it may be when I have a photo shoot. Well, a few months ago Sam and I were on a road trip and one of our stops was at Monument Valley (on the UT/AZ border). As we were leaving I pulled off on the side of the road to take a picture of the road leading into the backside of the valley, a picture I had seen posted before by a friend. Well, much to my surprise, right as I positioned myself for the shot, two wild horses came out of nowhere and started walking across the road, I quickly cranked my shutter speed up and fired away. The result was this picture. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I was so stunned thinking to myself, “this never happens to me!”.

Becca Tapert X UNIONBAY

What piece of advice would you give someone trying to break into the world of photography?

Shoot every chance you get. Don’t make excuses about not having a subject to shoot or ‘nice’ camera. Start with the little things around your house, walking around your neighborhood, start with your smartphone. Get as many reps in as you can and the quality will come over time. Make sure you are doing photography for the right reasons. If you’re in it to gain fame or money, then you’re doing it for all the wrong reasons. Whatever your reason is, it should be strong enough to make photography never feel like work. I believe if you do what you’re truly passionate about and hustle hard, you’ll eventually get the opportunity to be compensated for doing what you love, and it will never feel like a job.

A quote to live by…

Comparing yourself to others will always cause you to regret what you aren’t, rather than allow you to enjoy who you are.

Capitol Hill Block Party Recap | Music Monday

Capitol Hill Block Party 2016

For the past 20 years, the Capitol Hill Block Party has proven its reputation for bringing some of the greatest local and national performers to one stage in the heart of Seattle, WA.  As a sponsor of this year’s event, we were excited to hang out and watch the shows all weekend, including seeing the Washington-based music duo, Odesza (…who killed it). We were also pumped to partner with a local art community, The Vera Project, who screen printed sick shirts with us at the event.

Feature Friday | Alyssa Broadus

This week we are featuring an eclectic creative who is behind the lifestyle blog about life’s Little Fixations, Alyssa Broadus. We love her vintage twist that her photography portrays, plus her Instagram page has us daydreaming about doughnuts and coffee.

Meet Alyssa Broadus.

Alyssa Broadus

Who is Alyssa Broadus? Can you share a quick bio with us — where you’re from, what you do, and how you got where you are?

My name is Alyssa Broadus, and I live in Kansas City, Missouri! Although I’ve lived here most of my life, throughout college I was able to move to Los Angeles to attend FIDM, and spent a brief three months in New York City for a fashion internship at Allure Magazine. When I moved back to Kansas City, it felt brand new to me. New coffee shops, boutiques, and neighborhoods; and I ended up spending most of my days off exploring. I was so taken back by these places, that I wanted to find a way to capture and share them with others. That’s when Little Fixations was created!

Describe your style in three words.

Individualist, 70’s-Inspired, Practical.

Right now I can’t stop wearing…

Overalls; It’s become an addiction! Short, long, jean or black, I am all about em’!

My coffee order is always…

Iced Americano with a little bit of cream. As of lately though, I’ve found an awesome iced matcha tea latte in KC, so that’s been a new go-to!

Feature Friday | Andrew Kearns

This week we are featuring one of our favorite Pacific Northwest photographers, Andrew Kearns. Andrew spends his time traveling and documenting his rad adventures on the road. He has recently started a Vlog to showcase his behind-the-scenes photography &  keeps us up-to-date on his cool adventures via Instagram. #AdventureGoals

Meet Andrew.

Andrew Kearns

Who is Andrew Kearns? Can you share a quick bio with us — where you’re from, what you do, and how you got where you are?

I’m Andrew Kearns! I am based out of Washington and I do freelance photography/videography for a living. After shooting, messing up, learning from my mistakes, and working really hard, my hobby/passion has become my career. I love it.

Andrew Kearns

When did you get your first camera? How has your style developed since you first started shooting?

I got my own camera when I graduated from High School as a gift. From there I just shot casually, and kept shooting more and more. I hiked a lot and took a camera along everywhere. Then I got into portraits, and lifestyle, brand work, etc. It’s a process for sure.

Where do you get inspiration?

I am most inspired by those who are working really, really hard at what they do and constantly striving to be better. People that are out there hustling and grinding are the people that I look up to whether they are a big deal or not.

What is your favorite picture you’ve ever taken?

I have this Munra Point shot that I love (below). I was stoked on how it looked, but also this was a hike I wanted to do for years, and finally getting there was something so surreal.

Andrew Kearns

Where is your favorite place to adventure?

I loved Montana and Iceland. They were amazing for different reasons, but I’m finding it’s all about the people I’m with.

What piece of advice would you give someone trying to break into the world of photography?

You have to keep shooting, and be constantly striving to be better, and try ideas. Also, you have to do big things to stand out, the days of drive up spots are over.

What are your top three favorite Instagram accounts to follow and why?

@alexstrohl

All three are friends, are talented, inspiring, and work hard at what they do.

What’s next for you?

Lots of videos/vlogs hopefully! That’s my next project.

Thanks Andrew! Make sure you check out his most recent Vlog’s from shooting in Iceland. ✌

Feature Friday | Josie Rodriguez

This week we are featuring UNIONBAY brand ambassador, Josie Rodriguez. When we discovered her photographs on Instagram, we quickly become obsessed with her style of photography. You will see why.

Josie Rodriguez

Who is Josie Rodriguez? Can you share a quick bio with us — where you’re from, what you do, and how you got where you are?

Hello! My name is Josie Rodriguez. I am a Mexican-American photographer from sunny California, currently shooting portraits of babes frolicking around flower fields and mountain tops. I spend most of my time exploring the great outdoors and when I’m not doing that I like to stay home and explore the World Wide Web.

Josie Rodriguez

Describe your personal style in three words.

COMFORT. OVER. EVERYTHING.

Where do you get your photography inspiration?

I definitely get a lot of my inspiration from my culture, I love surrounding my subjects with loads of color and foliage. Although Frida Kahlo’s media was not photography, she is one of my biggest inspirations.

Josie Rodriguez

What piece of advice would you give someone trying to break into the world of photography?

I would tell them to keep an open mind and don’t settle for a “genre” of photography. Experimentation in your art is the best thing you can do. I think people tend to forget that photography is an art because it gets drowned out by the major technological aspects of it.

Josie Rodriguez

What are your top three favorite Instagram accounts to follow and why?

@cactusmagazine for my daily fix of plants and succulents.

j7

@helloemilie because her work is such an inspiration and she is such a talented photographer.

j8

@muradosmann for his amazing, breathtaking photographs of his series #followmeto.

j9

Right now I can’t stop taking pictures of…

Flowers!!! I pick flowers on all my hikes and bring them home for props and inspiration. That is my current obsession.

Josie Rodriguez

Last place I traveled to was…

Sequoia National Park– It was better than anything I could have possibly imagined. I recently became a National Parks member, so I am very exited for the adventures to come in our nations wonders this summer.

Josie Rodriguez

I will never leave my house without…

My blue backpack– I’m definitely a backpack over purse girl, considering I always bring my camera and some props everywhere I go. This backpack is such a trooper.

j6

What’s your mantra?

“Everything I do must visually appeal to me.” Because I’m such a visual person and I am also kind of O.C.D. about a lot of stuff.
